Time Allocation            : 15 Minutes

Standard of Competence
Understanding the principles of classification in living organism

Basic Competence
Understanding principle of living organism classification based on characteristics similarities and differences

Indicator to Achieve the Competence
1.    Classify the object of biology based on characteristics similarities and differences
2.    Making dichotomous key to classified objects of biology

Learning Objectives
1.    Student are able to classify the object of biology based on characteristics similarities and differences
2.    Student are able to makes dichotomous key to classified objects of biology

Teaching Materials
An identification or classification key is the most frequently used tool to identify plants or animals, especially for those who do not have reference specimens. Here identification is done step by step because every key has different determination abilities. There are keys to identify specimens up to level of familiy, genus, or even species.
An identification key is usually dichotomous, so it called dichotomous key. It is an identification key where someone has follow the path determined by the order of the choice. There are two alternatives to every choice (so it is like a choose-your-own adventure book).
Dichotomous key consist of numbered lines of couplets that form stanza. Every stanza consists of two lined called a guide. A guide consist of two opposite characteristic and is marked by a letter. Those characteristics are arranged properly to let users choose one option out of two in each set of opposites. Eventually, an answer will be derived based the collections of the object characteristics.

The making of identification key based on figure is as follows :
1.        a. Single Leaves ....................................................................        2
b. Compound Leaves ............................................................       4
2.    a. Linear Leaves ...................................................................        grass
       b. Wide Leaves ....................................................................        3
3.    a. Serrated leaf margins .......................................................          Hibiscus Plant
       b. Smooth leaf margin ..........................................................         Potato Plant
4.    a. Leaf having 7 leaflets .......................................................          Kapok Tree
       b. leaf having more than 7 leaflets .......................................           5

5.    a. Leaflets on petiole .............................................................        Mahogany Tree
       b. leaflets on petiolule ............................................................        Peacock Flower
